Louisiana teacher requirements
Louisiana teachers must be certified and “highly qualified” in the grades and subjects to be taught. Schools in the Recovery District may employ non-certified individuals under an annual approval if they are pursuing a program which will lead to teacher certification within three years. Alternative Certification Programs include options for individuals with non-education degrees to become certified, under the Practitioner, Master’s Degree or Non-Master’s/Certification-Only programs. Candidates for admission to any one of the alternative certification programs must possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university and must pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) on the PRAXIS and the content specific examinations for the PRAXIS. Secondary teachers may instruct a few periods in an out-of-certificate field if they have completed sufficient coursework in that subject. Out of state teachers with four years of successful experience in another state, and one year of experience in Louisiana, are exempt from testing requirements.
